When actress Emma Sloan is badly burned in a studio fire, she is enrolled in an experimental gengineering program and implanted with a symbiotic organism that replaces what little skin she has left.
Horrified by the hideous alteration, Emma barely has a chance to grieve her own death before the other test subjects break out of the secure wing of the hospital. Their skins begin to reproduce, and the symbionts build their numbers by implanting new skins on the homeless and dispossessed.
Colonel Nick Archer is assigned to recover the escapees. His orders are to use Emma as long as she's useful, and when she isn't useful anymore...
However, Nick is an Emma Sloan fan. He'd thought he'd be able to put her down if it became necessary, but as Emma gets stronger, he keeps making excuses to keep her alive.
Meanwhile, the skin has its own survival imperatives, and by the time Archer makes up his mind, Emma won't be easy to kill.
