This is Cho'en/Ka, pictured here with her favorite catpil, Puffy. Cho'en, which is the Gaean pronunciation of Johanna-Eunice, is only half human. Her other half is a Gaean named Ka. Don't even ask about Gaean reproduction. Wow. Between them, they have one three-lobed brain. Sometimes her two personalities are completely merged. Other times, as when Johanna-Eunice (Cho'en) sleeps, Ka is the dominant personality. She is a true chimaera--half her cells are human, the other half Gaean. It's a long story. Read the book.
Catpils are the fruiting bodies of an underground mycelial mass. When the organism ripens, it sprouts five to ten catpils, parti-colored vermiforms that return to the site of their parent mass to spore, which they do by rolling on the ground to shake the spores out of their fur.
They hang around humans because humans attract sneakdillies, one of the catpils' favorite prey animals.
