But in case you need a teaser, here is a sample from ch. 1 introducing Tora, the clone lieutenant who, according to beta readers, kinda stole the show from Annia, the person who actually cured the incurable plague.
Tora doesn't have a name yet here. She was designed with no long-term memory except for the simulations implanted in her head.
Her ear clip was silent. That was bad. Bad like the burning metal
smell in the corridors. It meant maybe the ship was dead, but worse, it
meant she had no orders.
She did not know what to do. Fight? No enemies. She didn’t
know where enemies were. She didn’t know what had happened.
She remembered violence ripping through the decks of the ship.
She remembered trying to go to the barracks for her soldiers, but an
emergency bulkhead had blocked the corridor. She could not get to her
She had paced back and forth in front of the bulkhead for a
while, worrying about her soldiers, but they did not come out, and the hatch would not open. She could not get to them, but maybe there were other soldiers. Simulations said if she lost her soldiers, she could get more. She was not allowed to take them from another lieutenant. She did not agree with that part. If she found some soldiers, she might fight their lieutenant and take the soldiers before Command noticed and told her to stop. She went toward C-med. C-med was nearby. Sometimesthere were soldiers in C-med. They wouldn’t have a lieutenant. Maybe she could take them.
Tora eventually got her name, her long-term memory restored, and all the soldiers she could possibly want--okay, not all, she didn't get to keep *all* the soldiers, but she got to keep a lot.
